What Is The Purpose of Sewage Treatment

Reading Time: 3 minutes

In the UK, we are fortunate enough to have sewage treatment systems, which takes wastewater from homes and buildings and ensures it is completely clean before releasing it back into the environment. However, some less developed countries may have to live without this, so what happens when the sewage isn’t being treated and is sewage treatment even necessary?

What is Sewage Treatment?

Sewage treatment is the process in which wastewater is cleaned of all types of contaminants, typically using a 3 step process. Once the water is safe enough, it can then be released back into the environment, whether that is anything from a lake or a river so it can begin the cycle again.

Why is Sewage Treatment Necessary?

Haiti is one of the countries that does not have the money or resources to have any kind of sewage treatment, so instead, buckets are used. These buckets contain human waste which will get picked up and used by farmers for compost. The way of life without sewage treatment is far from easy which is why the UK is extremely fortunate to have it.

If we released sewage back into the environment without treating it, nature would become overwhelmed by the billions of gallons of sewage and wastewater produced every day. By treating it, pollutants are reduced to a level that is much more bearable for the environment.

If we had untreated water floating around in our rivers, we would be putting the environment and our own health at risk. Many different kinds of animals and plants live in our rivers, lakes and oceans and without clean water, their life may be at risk.

As well as affecting wildlife, without sewage treatment, it would also affect humans. Water would no longer be safe to swim or play in as it could carry diseases that are harmful or even life-threatening.

The Future of Sewage Treatment

Sweden is already ahead of us in terms of not only making sure that wastewater is being reused but also producing biogas from sewage sludge and eventually producing biorefineries. They are utilising this waste and using it for gas in cars and one day the biorefineries will help to produce materials too. The sewage sludge can be an environmental problem which Sweden has now tackled, there are endless amounts of benefits for carrying out sewage treatment and they are definitely necessary for the way we live in the UK.
