Water Booster Replacement Pump Set

Pumping Solutions replaced a water booster pump set in Coventry within a block of flats with an updated pump system. This was achieved with three vertical multi-stage pumps controlled by inverters via a pressure transducer, manufactured by DAB Pumps.

Water booster pump sets are often found in hospitals and blocks of high-rise flats, where there is a demand for higher pressure water to be pumped around the building. These booster pumps are used to increase the water pressure and flow, ensuring water is pumped to all floors using variable speed to ensure optimal pressure whilst at the same time being energy efficient.

The existing pumps run at one speed, and are hooked up to a control panel where they are connected to timers. The pumps would periodically switch on, build the water to the correct pressure, and then turn off again. Of the existing set of three pumps on this site, only one of the pumps was still operational as two had malfunctioned over the years. Booster pumps are often installed in sets of three to ensure that water pressure is maintained should a pump break down. In this project, the building no longer had any fallback pumps should the one remaining pump break down.

The new booster pumps that were installed are inverter controlled. These are controlled to maintain a steady pressure and run continually at a variable speed to match the pressure requirements of the building. As these are running continuously, they should not experience as many issues as the existing pumps would have done, as they are operating within an optimal range for long periods of time, resulting in a more eco-friendly water booster pump set.

Being inverter controlled this means the inverters can run at a constant (more precise pressure) whereas before the old system would hit pressure and engage a timer this allowing pump over run and potentially waste energy, Being inverter controlled also allows the pump to build the pressure using less power – again, saving energy.

This project took two days in total to replace the booster pump set with a newer version. The pump set is sustained with an annual maintenance plan, to ensure the booster pumps are kept in prime condition, providing ample water pressure to the whole building.
